The actress audiences love to hate
Born and raised in Avissawella, Sathsarani Gunathilake studied at Seethawaka National School and went on to study agriculture at Aquinas College of Higher Studies. Acting was never the plan. She first stepped in front of the camera as a fashion model, and modelling soon led to her first teledrama role.
She took the craft seriously from the start, studying acting before taking on roles, and even researching the lives of women in the 1970s and ’80s to play Surangi in Sasankara. Today she is best known as Nethmi in Ron Soya, a character so convincing that viewers scold her for it. Off screen, she says, she is nothing like Nethmi: open, warm and a lover of animals.
